Texas has employment programs specifically designed to help veterans translate their military experience into civilian careers, find job opportunities, and access training and hiring preferences.

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) offers dedicated employment services for veterans and transitioning service members, including job search assistance, resume help, career counseling, and referrals to training programs. Veterans receive priority of service at Texas Workforce Centers statewide.

TVC Employment Services staff are located at Workforce Centers across Texas. They provide one-on-one job placement assistance, help veterans identify transferable skills, and connect them with employers who actively recruit veterans. Services are free.

Federal Veterans' Employment Services

The U.S. Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS) administers federal programs that help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful careers. Programs include the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and federal hiring preference guidance.

Texas Veterans Commission mental health program

The TVC Mental Health Program provides free, confidential mental health counseling to Texas veterans and their family members. Services include individual and group therapy, case management, and peer support. No VA enrollment is required.

VA mental health care

The VA offers a broad range of mental health services to eligible veterans, including treatment for PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance use, and military sexual trauma. Care is available at VA medical centers, community-based outpatient clinics, and through tele health appointments.

Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) operates a statewide network of mental health crisis services, including mobile crisis teams and crisis stabilization units. Services are available to any Texan in crisis, including veterans who are not currently enrolled in VA care.

Veterans with service-connected disabilities may be eligible for monthly compensation, healthcare, and other benefits through the VA and the Texas Veterans Commission. Understanding what you qualify for and how to file a claim is the first step.

The Texas Veterans Commission provides free claims assistance to help veterans file for VA disability compensation. TVC claims officers are accredited by the VA and can help you gather evidence, complete paperwork, and navigate the appeals process if a claim is denied. There is no cost to use TVC claims services.

The ADA and other federal laws protect veterans with disabilities from employment discrimination. The Texas Military Department (TMD) Family Support Services program provides resources and referrals to help military families navigate the challenges of service — including deployment, reintegration, financial readiness, and access to community support. Services are available to families of Texas National Guard and State Guard members.

The Hazlewood Act

The Hazlewood Act provides eligible Texas veterans, service members, and their children with an exemption from tuition and most fees at Texas public colleges and universities — up to 150 credit hours. To qualify, veterans generally need to have entered military service as a Texas resident, received an honorable discharge, and meet income and enrollment requirements. Eligible veterans can also transfer unused hours to a dependent child.

GI Bill benefits

The GI Bill provides federal education benefits to eligible veterans, service members, and in some cases, their dependents. Benefits can cover tuition, housing, and books at approved schools.
