How to apply for a handgun license
To get a Texas LTC, you need to meet eligibility requirements, complete a certified course, and submit your application to DPS.

Complete a certified training course
All LTC applicants must complete a DPS-certified handgun training course. The course covers laws related to carrying a handgun, use of force and deadly force, non-violent dispute resolution, and handgun use and safety. You will also complete a shooting proficiency demonstration.
Courses are offered by licensed instructors across Texas. Course length varies but must meet the minimum DPS requirements.
Gather your documents
Before you submit your application, make sure you have the following ready: a valid government-issued photo ID, fingerprints (submitted electronically through an approved vendor), a passport-style photo, and proof of eligibility if applicable.
Submit your application
Submit your LTC application online through the Texas DPS portal. You will need to pay the application fee at the time of submission. DPS will review your application and notify you of the outcome by mail.

Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Discounts may apply if you qualify under a special condition — such as active military, honorably discharged veteran, or certain other categories. Review the full fee schedule on the DPS website before you apply.

Handgun safety and carrying laws
Texas LTC holders have a responsibility to understand the laws governing where and how they may carry.
Know where you can and cannot carry
State law sets out the locations where carrying is prohibited — including schools, polling places, courts, racetracks, secured areas of airports, and establishments that derive 51% or more of their income from alcohol sales. Carrying in prohibited locations is a criminal offense.
Traveling outside Texas?
Your LTC may be honored in other states through reciprocity agreements. Laws vary by state — check the agreement for the state you are traveling to before you carry.
Renew your license
Texas LTCs are valid for five years. DPS will send a renewal notice approximately six months before your expiration date. You can renew online through the DPS portal. Renewing late may result in additional fees.
Renewal fee
Fees are non-refundable. Discounts may apply for active military, honorably discharged veterans, and other qualifying special conditions. If your license has been expired for more than one year, you must submit a new original application rather than a renewal.

Become a handgun licensed instructor
Certified Texas LTC instructors teach the required training course to LTC applicants. To become an instructor, you must meet eligibility requirements and pass a DPS instructor proficiency exam.

Complete the instructor exam
DPS administers instructor proficiency exams at locations across Texas. The exam tests your knowledge of LTC laws, handgun safety, and course instruction. You must pass both a written and shooting proficiency component.
Submit your instructor application
Once you pass the proficiency exam, submit your instructor application through the Texas DPS portal. You will need to pay the instructor application fee. DPS will notify you once your application is processed.
