Apply for a Texas handgun license
To get a license to carry (LTC) in Texas, you must meet eligibility requirements, complete a certified course, and submit your application to DPS.

Texas LTC applicants must meet eligibility requirements. Before you apply, review the DPS website's eligibility FAQs, lawful presence requirements, reciprocity with other states, and out-of-state non-Texas resident information.
Complete a certified training course
LTC applicants must complete a DPS-certified handgun training course. Courses are offered by licensed instructors across Texas. The course covers laws related to carrying a handgun, use of force and deadly force, non-violent dispute resolution, and handgun use and safety. You must also complete a shooting proficiency demonstration.
Gather your documents
Before you submit your application, have the following information available:
- valid government-issued photo ID
- fingerprints (submitted electronically through an approved vendor)
- passport-style photo
- proof of eligibility, if applicable.

Handgun laws and license renewal
Texas LTC holders are responsible for understanding the laws that govern where and how they may carry, and for renewing their license in a timely manner.
Know where you can and cannot carry
State law determines the locations where carrying is prohibited. This includes schools, polling places, courts, racetracks, secured areas of airports, and establishments that derive 51% or more of their income from alcohol sales. Carrying in prohibited locations is a criminal offense.
Traveling outside Texas?
Your LTC may be honored in other states through reciprocity agreements. Laws vary by state, so check the agreement for the state you're traveling to before you carry.
Renew your LTC
Texas LTCs are valid for five years. You will receive a renewal notice from DPS about six months before your expiration date. You can renew online through the DPS RSD Connect portal.
Please note: Renewal fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. You may qualify for a discount under a special condition, such as active military, honorably discharged veteran, or certain other categories. If your license has been expired for more than one year, you must submit a new original application rather than a renewal.

Licensed instructors
Certified Texas LTC instructors teach required training courses to LTC applicants. To become an instructor, you must meet eligibility requirements and pass a DPS instructor proficiency exam.
Review instructor eligibility requirements
To become a certified LTC instructor, you must hold a valid Texas LTC, meet eligibility requirements established by Texas Government Code, and pass a DPS instructor proficiency examination. Review the full list of requirements before you apply.
Complete the instructor exam
DPS administers instructor proficiency exams at locations across Texas. The exam tests your knowledge of LTC laws, handgun safety, and course instruction. You must pass both a written and shooting proficiency component.
Submit your instructor application
Once you pass the proficiency exam, submit your instructor application and fees through the DPS RSD Connect portal. DPS will notify you once your application is processed.
