Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
SNAP — formerly known as food stamps — provides monthly benefits you can use to buy groceries at most stores and farmers' markets. Benefits are loaded onto a Lone Star Card, which works like a debit card at checkout. The amount you receive depends on your household size and income.
How to apply for SNAP
You can apply for SNAP online through Your Texas Benefits, the state's benefits portal. You can also apply by mail, fax, or in person at your local Health and Human Services (HHS) office. After you apply, you will be scheduled for an interview — which can be done by phone — and will typically receive a decision within 30 days. If your household is in immediate need, you may qualify for expedited benefits within 7 days.
Who qualifies for SNAP
To qualify for SNAP in Texas, your household generally needs to meet the state's income and resource limits. Most households with a gross monthly income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level may be eligible. Eligibility also depends on household size, citizenship status, and whether household members are working or enrolled in school. Some households — including those with elderly or disabled members — may qualify under different rules.

If your household has little or no money and needs food right away, you may qualify for expedited SNAP benefits within 7 days of applying. Let the HHS office know your situation when you apply.

Most distribute food through local partner agencies such as food pantries, shelters, and community centers.

No documentation required
Most food banks and pantries do not require proof of income, ID, or residency to receive food. If you are unsure what to bring, contact the food bank or pantry directly before your visit.
