Renewing a driver license or ID card online
You can renew your Texas driver license (DL) or ID card online if you meet the following requirements. If your situation doesn't fit, you'll need to visit a Driver License Office to complete your renewal.
General requirements for online renewal
To renew online, you need to meet all of the following: your last renewal was completed in person at a Driver License Office; your DL or ID card expires within two years or expired less than two years ago; you are a U.S. citizen; your Social Security number is on file with DPS; and your browser supports 128-bit encryption. If you hold both a DL and an ID card, you'll need to visit a Driver License Office to surrender one before you can use online services.
Additional requirements for driver license renewals
If you are renewing a driver license (not just an ID card), you also need to: be 78 or younger — Texans 79 and older need to renew in person; be renewing a Class C, M, or CM license; have no change in your vision or physical or mental condition since your last renewal that affects your ability to drive; and have no outstanding traffic tickets, warrants, or a suspended or revoked license. Provisional licenses are eligible for online renewal only if you are at least 30 days from turning 18. Learner licenses are not eligible for online renewal.
Renewing a commercial driver license (CDL)
You can renew a CDL online if you meet all the general and DL requirements above, and you also: do not have a hazardous materials endorsement; and have a valid, unexpired Medical Certificate on file with DPS, if one is required for your license class.
Replacing or updating your address online
You can replace your Texas driver license, commercial driver license, or ID card online, or update the address on file, if you meet the following requirements.
Requirements for online replacement or address change
To replace your card or change your address online, you need to: have a current, unexpired DL, CDL, or ID card — if your card is expired, you can only update your address if you renew at the same time, and you cannot replace an expired card online; be at least 18 years old with a standard driver license — provisional and learner licenses are not eligible; have your Social Security number on file with DPS; and use a browser that supports 128-bit encryption. To replace or change the address on a driver license specifically, you also need to be in good standing — suspended, revoked, or disqualified licenses are not eligible.
