Texas by Texas (TxT) FAQs
What is linking and what does it mean if I link my license or registration?
Linking establishes a connection between TxT and the agency that offers related services. For example, linking your Texas DL/ID to your account so you can complete transactions with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). You can also link other items to your account such as your car(s), boat(s), and/or your massage therapy license.
Once you’ve linked these items, you’ll be able to use TxT to take care of these services:
- Vehicle registration renewals
- Driver license/ID card renewal, replacement, upgrade, or surrender
- Massage therapy/massage instructor license renewals
- Boat registration renewals, lost decal replacements, and replacement/additional ID card orders
Please note: DPS and TxDMV require you to have a Texas DL/ID linked to your account before you can access the services they offer on TxT. If not already linked, you'll be prompted to link your DL/ID before you can start a transaction.
Can I deactivate my TxT account?
Yes. You can deactivate your TxT account by clicking “Deactivate My Account” in Account Settings on the TxT website at https://txt.texas.gov or by tapping “Deactivate Account” on the Account tab in the TxT iOS or Android mobile app.
Please note: Deactivating your account will clear all your data except your account name, email address, and your transaction history with Texas government agencies. Keeping this limited set of information allows you to return and access your deactivated account later if necessary.
Can I link multiple vehicles to my TxT account?
Yes, you can link multiple vehicles to your TxT account if they're eligible to be renewed online. Once you’ve linked a vehicle, you’ll receive notifications when it’s time to renew your registration and you can complete the renewal with your TxT account. Make sure to get a passing emissions inspection first if it's required by your county.
Can I renew my vehicle registration on TxT if I don’t have a Texas DL/ID?
No. If you do not have a current Texas DL or ID, you will need to renew your vehicle registration in person with another form of government identification. You can look up your county's tax office location here: https://www.txdmv.gov/tax-assessor-collectors/county-tax-offices
What vehicles are not eligible to be linked or renewed on TxT?
Per Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) requirements, not all vehicles can be linked or renewed on TxT. If you’re unable to link your vehicle, it may be because:
- The motor vehicle record contains a remark/indicator restricting online renewal
- The vehicle’s license plate displays the International Symbol of Access (ISA) and exceeds the gross weight requirement
- The vehicle is registered with a classification preventing the online calculation of registration period length and fees
- The vehicle fuel type is invalid or unknown
- The specialty license plate assigned to the vehicle is no longer offered or is ineligible for online renewal
Please note: If you have questions about your vehicle or these scenarios, please contact the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) or your local county tax assessor-collector for more details. The Texas.gov Help Desk cannot answer questions about this issue.
Can I renew commercial vehicles on TxT?
No. Commercial and government vehicles cannot be renewed on TxT. Currently, you must renew these vehicles in person or online with TxDMV’s "classic" vehicle registration renewal application. You can look up your closest county tax office here: https://www.txdmv.gov/tax-assessor-collectors/county-tax-offices
Why did I get a “Vehicle not found” message when trying to renew my registration?
If you get this error message after entering your license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN, it typically means that the information you entered may not match what is on file with your county tax office. This can also occur if the vehicle registration is expired for more than one year.
Please note: Vehicles over one year past expiration are not eligible for online renewal. For further information or assistance with this error message, please contact your county tax office - the Texas.gov Help Desk cannot help with this issue. You can find contact information for your local tax office here: https://www.txdmv.gov/tax-assessor-collectors/county-tax-offices
I renewed my vehicle registration on TxT, but it still says it has expired or will expire. Did something go wrong with my renewal?
After you submit and pay for your renewal on TxT, you’ll receive an email receipt as proof that your payment was received. However, this item will remain on our TxT “To-do List” while your renewal is being reviewed and processed by your county’s tax assessor office. This may take up to three (3) business days.
My Texas DL/ID was lost or stolen. Can I use TxT to order a replacement?
Maybe. If you don’t have a Texas DL or ID in your possession but you do know the DL/ID number and DD/Audit number from the card that was lost, then you may be able to replace your DL/ID on TxT.
You’ll need to enter information from your Texas DL/ID including the 20 digit DD-number from your card to access these services. The DD number (sometimes referred to as an Audit number) is located at the bottom of your card. We use this information to confirm your identity, which ensures your account stays safe.
Please note: If you do not have or know your DD number, you cannot complete Driver License or ID services on TxT. For assistance with your Texas DL/ID information, contact DPS at (512) 424-2600 or at https://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/customer_services/other.aspx.
I have a Texas learner license. Can I upgrade to a provisional license with TxT?
Maybe. If you completed the required driver education and passed your driving skills test with an approved third-party skills testing (TPST) provider, then you should be able to upgrade your learner license to a provisional license with TxT.
Please note: You must create a TxT account of your own at https://txt.texas.gov – you’ll need a personal email address, mobile phone number, current Texas driver license/ID, and Social Security number. Once you’ve created your TxT account, the option to upgrade your driver license will be available after DPS has approved your “packet” of information that was submitted by the TPST provider.
